Silicone Mold Making

Demonstration On Making Casts.

  • Two equal parts of Fast Cast in separate cups.
  • Make a bed of plasticine and place the character on top.
  • Using foam board, create a boarder around the plasticine.
  • Pack plasticine up to the half way mark around the character, sealing the foam board.
  • Take a craft knife around the edge to make it level.
  • Use a glue gun to seal the edges.

  • Mix the two parts of Fast Cast within 3 three minutes in a third cup.
  • Pour into the mould so it covers all the character.

  • Have spare plasticine to hand incase any leaks out of the base.
  • Will start to set within 30 minutes.
  • Once set, peal the foam off.

  • Remove the plasticine.

Researching And Designing A Castle For The Three Surgeons Project

Looking at designing the castle for one of the stop motion projects.
The brief I was given was that it had to be a French castle, preferably from the Provence, Midi Pyrenees or Languedoc areas.

These are some images of Provence castles.

These are some images of Midi Pyrenees castles.
These are some images of Languedoc castles.

Taking one of the images from the area of Provence, I greyed it out and added the vines. I didn't make the image too detailed because it is going to be in the distance with the 3 surgeons in the foreground.
After getting more feedback to make the vines bigger and the door the more visible I researched films like Jumanji.

To give the feel of distance I raised the castle up and added the dirt trail.
The brief also stated that the castle was within a corn field so I used these pictures as reference.

As the corn looked too much like grass we decided to use wheat instead.

Creating An Armature For Animating

Original Image

I redrew the image to scale to base the armature off.

Wire twisted together to bend easier under the skin.
Also will be stronger to hold the structure in place.

All the pieces put together.

I added the milliput to create the bone structure.

Diagram to show the head structure.

Testing The Armature

I think my armature works for just the top half movements, the bottom half of the character is quite small and is covered by the coat so the leg movements wont be seen.
I made the armature to small to be able to do a walk cycle with. But if I made this character a lot bigger, other characters he would be interacting with would have to be a lot bigger and then they would probably be unworkable as well.

Colour Theory

Primary, Secondary and Tertiary Colours

Colour Wheel

Using the colour swatches I had previously made I made a colour wheel.
The colour wheel is used to determine which colours are complimentary or contrasting.
Complimentary colours are two colours that are opposite to each other.
Contrasting colours are the colours that are diagonal to to each other.
For example:
Red is from the warm half of the wheel and blue is from the cool half of the wheel, therefore they are contrasting colours.

Making Pictures With Contrasting And Complimentary Hues

  • Make a picture with contrasting colours.
  • Make the picture again using 3-4 harmonious colours.
  • Then using 3 harmonious colours and one complimentary colour.
First I made a transparent layer to make my image template.
I can delete this layer after the colours have been added.
That way the colours will been shown better.

I then added the contrasting colours under the template.
Removing the template.
Deleting the coloured layers, I started with the blank template again.
I then used 3-4 harmonious colours.
Removing the template.
Starting with the template again,
I used 3 harmonious colours and one complimentary colour in this image.
Removing the template.

Tint and Shade

Taking two contrasting colours and mixing two tints and two shades of each colour to create a tonal colour swatch.
Two sets of two colours making ten in total.

  • Make a picture balancing all five colours.
  • Make the same picture where the tints are dominant.
  • Make the same picture with the shade dominant.
  • Add one tint or shade from the contrasting colour set.

Saturation

  • Taking a pair of complimentary colours and mixing them together to get a range of neutral or broken colours.

  • Create an image that is balanced. (Using all the colours from the colour swatch.)
  • Making the same image but the broken colours dominant. (Using all the colours from the colour swatch.)
  • Make the picture using one pure hue and opposite broken colours. (About five colours in total.)

Colour Proportion

  • Make one hue stand out from the other.
  • Make the other hue stand out from the first.
  • Balance the two hues.
